Ask around and you will hear it both ways. Some people say Google is finished, that we will all just ask ChatGPT from now on. Others say nothing has really changed and Google is as strong as ever. As usual, the truth sits somewhere in the middle, and where exactly it sits matters a great deal if you rely on being found online.
So let us take the question seriously. Will AI replace Google search? And whatever the answer, what should a small business owner actually do about it this year?
The short answer
No, AI is not about to replace Google search overnight. But the way search works, and the way people get answers, is changing fast, and Google itself is leading a lot of that change. So the honest answer is this: search is not disappearing, it is being rebuilt around AI, and Google is right in the middle of it.
That distinction matters. If you assume Google is dying, you might neglect the things that still bring you most of your enquiries. If you assume nothing is changing, you will slowly lose ground to competitors who adapt. The businesses that win are the ones that see what is really shifting and move with it.
What is actually changing
For twenty years, search worked in a familiar way. You typed a question, Google gave you ten blue links, and you clicked one to find your answer. Your job as a business was to rank as high as possible on that list.
That model is being layered over with something new. Increasingly, you ask a question and get a composed answer written for you on the spot, pulling from several sources at once, with only a few links to explore further. You have probably seen it already:
- Google’s AI Overviews sit at the very top of many results, summarising the answer before the traditional links even begin.
- Google’s AI Mode is Google’s new conversational way to search. It is now the default AI experience, powered by its latest Gemini model, and already used by more than a billion people a month. You ask a question, then keep talking to refine it, much like ChatGPT, without ever leaving Google.
- ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot answer questions directly in a conversation, and more people now start there instead of a search bar.
- Voice assistants read a single answer aloud, with no list to scroll at all.
The common thread is that the answer is being assembled for the user, rather than handed to them as a list to sift through. That is the real shift. Not the death of search, but the rise of the answer.
And Google is not resisting this shift, it is leading it. At its most recent I/O developer conference, Google made AI Mode its default search experience, began merging AI Overviews and AI Mode into one seamless conversation, and previewed “search agents” that work away in the background on your behalf. It even rebuilt the search box itself so you can search with text, images, files or video. The company that owns search is rebuilding search around AI. That tells you which way this is going.
Why this matters for a small business
Here is the uncomfortable part. When search gives ten links, there are ten chances to be seen. When an assistant gives one composed answer that names two or three businesses, being left out is far more costly. You are not on page two where a determined visitor might still find you. You simply are not in the answer at all, and the person asking never knows you exist.
For a local business, that changes the stakes. Someone asking “who is the best florist near me” or “which accountant should I use in Swindon” may act on the first name an assistant gives them. If that name is a competitor, the enquiry was decided before you ever had a chance to compete on quality or price.
The good news is that the businesses AI recommends are not chosen at random, and they are usually not the biggest brands either. They are the ones an AI can understand clearly, trust, and repeat with confidence. That is something you can influence.
What stays the same
It is easy to get swept up in the change and forget what has not moved. Plenty has not.
- Google still drives most search traffic. Traditional results are not going anywhere soon, and for many searches they remain the main event.
- Good content still wins. Clear, genuinely helpful information is what both classic search and AI answers are built on. There is no shortcut around being useful.
- Trust signals still count. Reviews, a consistent presence across the web, and a real, findable business all matter as much as ever, arguably more.
So this is not a case of throwing out everything you know. The foundations of being found, useful content and a trustworthy presence, are exactly the foundations AI answers are built on too. You are extending your reach, not starting again.
What to do about it this year
You do not need to panic, and you do not need a big budget. You need to make your business easy for both Google and AI to understand and recommend. A few practical steps go a long way.
- Answer real questions plainly. Write the way your customers ask. Put a clear, direct answer near the top of each page, then explain underneath. Assistants lift clean, self-contained answers far more readily than clever marketing copy.
- Keep your details consistent everywhere. Your name, address and phone number should match exactly across your site, your Google Business Profile and every listing. Consistency is what lets an AI trust that you are one real business. Our guide on how to optimise your Google Business Profile for AI search walks through this.
- Earn genuine reviews. Answer engines lean on reputation to decide who is worth recommending. A steady flow of honest reviews is one of the strongest signals you can build.
- Structure your content so machines can read it. Clear headings, sensible formatting and the right schema markup help AI understand what your page is about. This is the heart of answer engine optimisation, and it is worth understanding the difference between AEO and SEO.
- Check whether you already appear. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overview the questions your customers would ask, and see who gets named. Our guide on how to get your website into AI search results sets out the full approach.
None of this is exotic. It is mostly the discipline of being clear, consistent and genuinely useful, applied with AI in mind.
The bigger picture
The question “will AI replace Google search” is really the wrong question. Search is not a single thing that either survives or dies. It is a habit, the habit of asking the internet for an answer, and that habit is only growing. What is changing is the shape of the answer people get back.
For a small business, that is an opportunity as much as a threat. The old game rewarded whoever could climb a crowded list of links. The new game rewards whoever is clearest, most trusted and easiest to recommend. That is a game a focused, well-run local business can absolutely win, often against far bigger competitors, if it prepares now rather than later.
