A website is not a “set it and forget it” purchase. The web moves on, your business changes, and a site that was fine three years ago can quietly start costing you customers. So how do you know when it is time for a refresh rather than a tweak? Here are ten clear signs.
1. It looks dated
First impressions are instant. If your site looks like it belongs to a different decade, visitors assume your business is behind the times too, fairly or not. A modern, clean design builds trust before anyone reads a word.
2. It is awkward on a phone
Pinching, zooming and sideways scrolling on a mobile is a dealbreaker. Most people will visit on a phone, and if it is a struggle, they leave. If your site is not genuinely mobile-friendly, that alone is reason enough.
3. It loads slowly
Every extra second of loading loses visitors and drags down your Google ranking. If your site feels sluggish, a rebuild on modern foundations often fixes it for good.
4. You cannot update it yourself
If changing a phone number or adding a page means emailing your developer and waiting a week, your website is working against you. A modern site puts you in control of the everyday edits.
5. It is not bringing in enquiries
This is the big one. If your website looks fine but the phone is not ringing, something is wrong: an unclear message, no obvious next step, or no trust signals. A redesign focused on conversion can change that.
6. It does not reflect what you do now
Businesses grow and shift. If your site still pushes services you have dropped, or misses the ones you now lead with, it is sending the wrong message to every visitor.
7. It is hard to find on Google
If you have slipped down the rankings or never appeared, an ageing site with poor structure and slow speeds is often the cause. A rebuild with solid foundations gives you a much better footing.
8. The branding is inconsistent
Mismatched logos, old colours, fonts that fight each other. Inconsistency looks unprofessional and chips away at trust. A redesign is the chance to pull everything back together.
9. It is not secure
If your site still shows “not secure” in the browser bar (no HTTPS padlock), visitors are warned away and Google marks you down. That is an urgent fix, and often a sign the whole site is overdue attention.
10. You are embarrassed to share it
A simple gut check. If you hesitate to send someone your web address, that tells you everything. Your website should be something you are proud to point people to.
So, redesign or tweak?
One or two of these might just need a fix. But if you are nodding along to several, you are past patching, and a fresh, modern site will pay for itself in trust and enquiries. The good news is a focused small business redesign is usually quicker and more affordable than people expect.
