If you have spent any time reading about online marketing lately, you have probably tripped over a new three-letter term: AEO. It sits next to the familiar SEO, and the two are often pitched as rivals. So what is answer engine optimisation, how is it different from search engine optimisation, and which one should a small business actually care about?
The short version: you need both, they overlap more than the hype suggests, and understanding the difference helps you spend your effort where it counts. Here is the plain-English guide.
What SEO means
Search engine optimisation is the long-established practice of getting your website to rank highly in search engines like Google and Bing. The aim is to appear near the top of the results page for terms your customers search, and earn the click through to your site.
SEO covers a lot of ground: the words on your pages, the structure of your site, how fast it loads, how it reads on a phone, the links pointing to it from other sites, and your local presence such as your Google Business Profile. Done well, it is one of the most cost-effective ways for a small business to get found, because the traffic is free and the people arriving are already looking for what you do.
What AEO means
Answer engine optimisation is the newer practice of getting your business surfaced inside direct answers, rather than a list of links. An “answer engine” is anything that responds to a question with a single, composed answer: Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, voice assistants and featured snippets all qualify.
When someone asks “what is the best way to find a reliable electrician” and gets a paragraph back naming a few firms and some advice, that paragraph is the answer engine at work. AEO is about being the source that answer is built from, and ideally being named in it.
The core difference
The simplest way to hold the distinction in your head:
- SEO competes for the click. It wants your link to appear and be chosen from a list of options.
- AEO competes for the answer. It wants your business to be the information the AI uses, and the name it gives, often when there is no list at all.
With SEO, the search engine points the visitor towards you and they decide. With AEO, the answer engine often does the deciding, summarising and recommending on the customer’s behalf. That makes inclusion far more valuable, because an answer might mention two or three businesses where a results page lists ten.
You will also see a third term, GEO, or generative engine optimisation, which is closely related to AEO and often used interchangeably. If you want the detail on that, our guide to generative engine optimisation breaks it down.
Where AEO and SEO overlap
Here is the reassuring part. AEO is not a separate machine you bolt onto your marketing. Most of what helps you rank also helps you get quoted, because answer engines build their replies from the same web that search engines crawl.
Both reward the same foundations:
- Clear, well-structured content that genuinely answers a question.
- A fast, mobile-friendly website that is easy to read and crawl.
- Consistent business information across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Genuine reviews and a trustworthy reputation.
- Structured data that helps machines understand what your pages mean.
Get these right and you improve both your rankings and your odds of being part of an AI answer. That is why pitting AEO against SEO is a little misleading. They are two outcomes from largely the same good practice.
Where they differ in emphasis
The differences are real, though, and they change how you write and structure things.
SEO leans on keywords and clicks. You think about the exact phrases people search, build pages around them, and aim to be chosen from the results.
AEO leans on questions and clarity. Answer engines work in natural language, so AEO rewards content that poses a real question and answers it directly and concisely, before expanding. A page that opens with a clear, two-sentence answer is far easier for an AI to lift than one that buries the point under three paragraphs of throat-clearing.
AEO also puts more weight on being mentioned and trusted across the wider web, not just on your own site. Answer engines cross-check sources, so consistent mentions, reviews and references all feed into whether you get named.
What a small business should actually do
You do not have to choose. The right approach is to keep doing solid SEO and add an AEO-aware layer on top. In practice:
- Keep your SEO foundations strong. A fast, mobile-friendly, well-written website with a complete Google Business Profile is the bedrock for both. If your basics are shaky, fix those first. Our web design and development services page explains how we approach this.
- Write to answer questions. For your key topics, ask “what would a customer actually say to an assistant”, then answer it plainly at the top of the page. Add an FAQ section in natural language.
- Lead with the answer, then explain. Put the direct response first, the supporting detail after. This suits both featured snippets and AI summaries.
- Build consistency and trust. Identical business details everywhere, genuine reviews, and mentions on reputable sites all raise your standing with answer engines.
- Add structured data. This behind-the-scenes labelling helps machines understand your business, services and reviews, and is missing from most small business sites.

The bottom line
AEO versus SEO is not a battle you need to pick a side in. SEO gets you found in search results. AEO gets you into the answers that increasingly sit above and instead of those results. The good news is that the work overlaps: clear content, a sound website, consistent information and a trusted reputation serve both.
The businesses that treat these as one joined-up effort, rather than chasing the latest acronym, are the ones that will stay visible as search keeps changing.
